Document certifying Rosa Lipovskaya’s working-class origin

About this Photograph

This certificate was issued in Kuzkovsky selsovet [village council] for my younger sister Rosa, so that she could obtain the right to enter Leningrad Economical-Technical School. This certificate says that Rosa is the daughter of a worker of a tar extraction plant, though she was in fact the daughter of the owner of this plant. In the 1930s, my father became a ‘lyshenetz’ [former noblemen – landowners, etc.] and all of our family lost our civil rights. This forged certificate helped my sister to get further education after school.
