Now, across from the 2nd City Hospital, there is a three-storey building directly at the street. My parents lived there. My grandmother made friends with Sophia Samoilovna, a woman who lived in this house. When the Germans were taking her to the ghetto, I remember how my grandmother and mother begged her: “Don’t go to the ghetto.” She was such an intelligent woman. I can see her right in front of me. My grandmother and mother were trying to persuade her to stay, saying that they would hide her and me. My grandmother recalled how during the revolution she would hide either Bolsheviks or Polish families. My grandmother once even hid a young boy whom she had found at the train station. They were trying to persuade her, but this woman went to the ghetto. She died there.
